Winter skincare is all about layering moisture and protecting the skin. When products are applied in the optimal order, the skin can better benefit from the active ingredients they contain. Calming and balancing CBD extract supports the skin barrier, reduces irritation, and helps the skin recover from winter-induced stress.
In this article, you’ll learn how to layer skincare products correctly so your skin gets the maximum benefit.
Moisturising Winter Skin: In What Order Should Skincare Products Be Layered?
Many people’s skin reacts to freezing winter temperatures. Not only the cold itself, but also wind and dry indoor air can make the skin feel tight and dehydrated. This often leads to flaking, while sebum production may become overactive at the same time.
At the core of winter skincare are two key elements: hydration and protection. Without them, the skin barrier weakens, moisture loss increases, and the skin becomes more reactive. A balancing CBD extract is a great addition to winter skincare - it’s a true multitasker, especially during the colder months.
A skincare routine should always be built in layers. Especially in cold weather, it’s worth keeping these tips in mind for proper winter skincare.
The order in which you apply skincare products matters. In winter, many people use a full arsenal of products. In summer, a face mist or a toner and a cream or facial oil may be enough, but in winter your routine might include a face mist, serum, oil, cream - and possibly even sunscreen. It’s important to know which product goes on first and which one should be applied last. A simple general rule is: water-based products first, then everything else.
Always start with the thinnest, most water-based product and finish with the thickest and most occlusive one -that is, the product that allows the least penetration of other products.
Let’s start with face mist/toner. Face mist is always applied to cleansed skin, and it’s essential because it helps the products applied afterward absorb more effectively. After face mist, you typically apply a facial oil or cream, both of which absorb much better when face mist is used underneath. Without face mist, it may feel like products don’t absorb properly, and your skin may not get their full benefits.
If you use eye care products, apply them after toner but before oil or cream. This ensures they don’t mix with other products.
It’s also important to know whether the products you’re using are natural cosmetics or not. There are differences between synthetic and natural cosmetics in terms of application order, as synthetic products can be far more occlusive than natural ones (meaning they allow fewer products to penetrate through them).
For example, natural cosmetic facial oils are never 100% occlusive, whereas synthetic oils can be. This means that if you’re using a synthetic facial oil, it should be applied last, as creams won’t absorb through it. With a natural cosmetic facial oil, however, you can apply a cream on top, as it will still absorb.
A Rule of Thumb for Natural Cosmetics Users:
- Cleanser
- Face mist or Toner
- Eye cream
- Facial oil or oil-based serum
- Face cream
- Sunscreen
The order of the last products (4–5) isn’t set in stone when both your facial oil and cream are natural cosmetics. You can apply them in either order, as both will absorb well regardless. If you’re using synthetic cosmetics, however, apply synthetic facial oil last.
Sunscreen products are always applied on top of all other skincare.
The Benefits of CBD Extract for Winter Skin
In freezing temperatures, the skin needs targeted products that soothe skin stressed by winter conditions. This is where anti-inflammatory and moisturizing CBD extract becomes especially beneficial. Blank& products containing CBD extract are developed in Finland in collaboration with a cosmetic chemist specialized in sensitive skin - someone who truly understands what sensitive and challenging skin needs.
CBD (cannabidiol) is a plant-based extract derived from hemp that interacts with the skin’s endocannabinoid system. This system regulates, among other things, the skin’s moisture balance, inflammatory responses, and protective barrier. When the skin barrier weakens in winter, CBD can help restore balance and provide relief not only for dryness, but also for concerns such as acne, rosacea, and atopic skin.
- CBD soothes the skin and reduces irritation
- It helps reduce redness and tightness
- CBD supports the skin barrier
- It helps balance sebum production, reducing impurities
If CBD as an ingredient is new to you, you can introduce CBD products into your routine one at a time. Start with a bestseller like the Veya Face Mist. Packed with humectants, it’s a powerful hydrator that also works beautifully to set makeup.
Next, you can add a balancing facial oil containing CBD extract, such as Amio or Evie. Both absorb quickly and give the skin a radiant, healthy glow. Makeup can be applied shortly after use.
Neo is our booster, especially effective when your skin needs targeted support - for example for intertrigo, rosacea, acne, or similar concerns. You can mix one or two drops of Neo into your regular cream if you want to apply it over a larger area of skin.
